Background of the Study

In the digital age, social media has emerged as a significant force influencing the perceptions and behaviors of students worldwide, including their attitudes toward physical education (Aliyu, 2023). In Sokoto North Local Government Area, Sokoto State, the intersection between social media exposure and students’ perceptions of physical education presents a complex dynamic. With an increasing number of students engaging with various digital platforms, the portrayal of physical education and sports-related activities on social media can either inspire participation or reinforce negative stereotypes (Bello, 2024). The content disseminated through these channels ranges from motivational health tips and fitness challenges to critical commentary on school sports policies, which collectively shape students’ attitudes (Gambo, 2023). Social media’s role in education has expanded beyond academic instruction, influencing extracurricular domains and altering traditional perceptions of physical education. In Sokoto North, this influence is particularly noteworthy due to the rising use of smartphones and the internet among youth. While many educators argue that social media can serve as a powerful tool to promote physical activity, there is concern that misinformation and negative portrayals might discourage active participation in physical education classes (Aliyu, 2023). Moreover, the interplay between cultural values and digital content further complicates how students perceive the relevance and importance of physical education (Bello, 2024). The current landscape of social media presents both opportunities and challenges. On one hand, platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok offer innovative ways to engage students with interactive content and fitness trends. On the other hand, the lack of regulatory oversight often leads to the spread of misleading information and unrealistic body images, which can adversely affect students’ self-esteem and interest in physical education (Gambo, 2023). This study aims to explore these multifaceted influences by examining how social media content shapes student perceptions, potentially altering their motivation to participate in physical education. By reviewing digital trends, conducting surveys, and engaging with educators, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of social media on physical education attitudes in Sokoto North. The findings will help inform educational strategies and social media guidelines that could enhance the positive effects while mitigating the negatives (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Although social media has the potential to enhance the appeal of physical education by providing engaging and relatable content, there is growing concern that its influence in Sokoto North may be leading to distorted perceptions among students. Many educators report that students are increasingly influenced by online trends that glorify extreme fitness regimes or promote unrealistic body images, thereby undermining the intrinsic value of school-based physical education programs (Aliyu, 2023). Additionally, the prevalence of negative commentary and sensationalized portrayals of physical education in digital media creates a counterproductive narrative that discourages student participation (Bello, 2024). The lack of critical digital literacy among students exacerbates this issue, as they may accept online content at face value without considering its credibility (Gambo, 2023). Furthermore, the rapid pace of social media trends often leaves little room for educators to respond effectively, resulting in a disconnect between school-based physical education and the digital influences that students encounter daily. This gap raises serious concerns about how social media may be reshaping student attitudes and behaviors towards physical education, potentially leading to reduced participation and a decline in overall physical fitness (Ibrahim, 2024). The problem is further intensified by the limited involvement of parents and community leaders in moderating the digital narratives that influence young minds. Consequently, this study is necessary to critically examine the extent to which social media shapes student perceptions of physical education in Sokoto North and to identify potential interventions that could align digital content with educational objectives. Addressing these issues is crucial for developing strategies that leverage social media’s positive potential while mitigating its harmful effects.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the influence of social media on student perceptions of physical education in Sokoto North.

2. To identify the positive and negative impacts of social media content on physical education attitudes.

3. To propose strategies for aligning social media messages with educational objectives in physical education.

Research Questions

1. How does social media influence students’ attitudes toward physical education in Sokoto North?

2. What are the predominant themes in social media content related to physical education?

3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance the positive influence of social media on physical education?

Research Hypotheses

1. Exposure to social media content significantly influences students’ perceptions of physical education.

2. Negative portrayals on social media are correlated with decreased student motivation for physical education.

3. Implementing digital literacy programs will mitigate the adverse effects of social media on physical education perceptions.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it examines the complex role of social media in shaping student perceptions of physical education in Sokoto North. The findings will offer insights into how digital influences can be harnessed to promote positive health behaviors while addressing potential drawbacks. By providing evidence-based recommendations, the research aims to support educators and policymakers in integrating digital media strategies into physical education programs, thereby enhancing student engagement and overall well-being (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to analyzing the impact of social media on student perceptions of physical education in Sokoto North Local Government Area, focusing solely on the influence of digital content on attitudes within the school context.
